BMW i4
The BMW i4 sedan is essential to the company’s growing EV lineup. With a battery drivetrain and extremely refined driving characteristics, it provides the aesthetic of the 4-series Grand Coupe. Three different i4 variants are available: The eDrive35 has 281 horsepower and 260 miles of EPA performance, whereas the eDrive40 delivers 335 horsepower with an estimated three million miles of driving. The first two models are single-motor rear-drive. In the fiery, all-wheel-drive, 536-hp i4 M50, that distance drops to 245 miles. It is huge praise that the latter drives like an M3 with greater handling.
The M50 accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in only 3.3 seconds, which is 0.2 seconds faster than an M3 Competition, and from 50 to 70 mph in just 2.0 seconds, 0.7 seconds faster than the Bimmer. The i4 is a commendable daily driver without running ab-toning acceleration runs. Although it lacks the steering feel we prefer in other M cars, it is a thrilling and elegant sedan with a smooth ride and delightful sports-sedan handling.

EV Performance, Power, and Motor
Depending on the model, the 2023 i4 supplies electricity to one or two electric motors. One of two single-motor rear-drive models, the eDrive35, uses a 281 horsepower motor. The eDrive40 has a single 335 hp motor mounted on the back axle. The M50 has electric motors in all of its axles, which provide all-wheel drive and 536 hp, and 586 lbs of torque. The M50 we drove outperformed an M3 Competitive with rear drive, reaching 60 mph in under 3.3 seconds. 18-inch wheels are standard on the rear-drive i4; 19-inch wheels are an option. The all-wheel-drive M50, on the other hand, includes adaptive dampers, variable-ratio steering, and either 19s or 20s. The i4 M50 that we drove had an immediate and powerful push, and while weighing significantly more than an M3, it moved confidently and beautifully because of its lower center of gravity.
Battery Life, Charging, and Range
According to BMW, the single-motor, rear-drive i4 eDrive40 can go up to about 300 miles on a full battery. A dual, all-wheel-drive M50 has the same 81.5 kWh battery, but its maximum distance is 245 miles. These i4 variants have a 200-kilowatt recharging capacity and can add 88–108 kilometers in 10 minutes. The entry-level eDrive35 model has a lower 66.0 kWh net capacity battery, which is said to have a range of about 260 miles and a charging speed maximum of 180 kW. The i4 can charge its battery from empty to full using the Level 2 (up to 11 kW) onboard charger in less than 8 hours.
Fuel efficiency and actual MPGe

The eDrive40 well with standard 18-inch wheels is the most fuel-efficient i4 variant, according to the EPA. The ratings for that particular model were 109 MPGe city and 108 MPGe main road. These numbers are slightly reduced when the greater 19-inch wheels are added, and the more potent M50 model also receives a lower rating. Although we have yet to put every i4 through our 75 mph highway route as part of our rigorous testing process, an i4 eDrive 40 Gran Coupe we evaluated had a range of 280 miles. EPA estimate is only two kilometers away. Visit this page for more details on the i4’s efficiency ratings.
Cargo, Comfort, and the Interior
With choices for rose gold accents, white leather interior, and light wood trim, the i4’s inside is luxuriously designed. The i4 and the fully-electric iX Suvs are the initial vehicles equipped with a huge, seamless dashboard display that occupies about two-thirds of the space. The general law is the same as in other BMW automobiles. The four-door i4 has a standard trunk in the back but looks like a coupe because of its high rear roofline.
Connectivity and Information
One of the first BMWs to include the most recent connectivity and infotainment technologies is the i4. The massive curving iDrive 8 dashboard display manages the system, which includes a 14.9-inch screen and a 12.3-inch virtual instrument panel. The system has several well-liked features, a rotary control in the center console, and improved voice commands. These include an Apple CarPlay system, Android Auto, and a Wi-Fi hotspot.
Features for Driver Assistance and Safety
The 2023 i4 has a variety of driver-assistance systems as standard and optional features. Visit the websites of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) for more details regarding the results of the Bimmer’s crash tests. Important safety elements include:
- automated preventive braking and forward collision prevention as standard
- Lane-keeping assistance and the common lane-departure warning
- available stop-and-go technology for adaptive cruise control

Coverage for Warranties and Maintenance
A competitive warranty from BMW is currently available, with one of the better complimentary maintenance periods.
- A powertrain warranty lasts eight years or one hundred thousand kilometers.
- Three years or 36,000 miles are covered under the complimentary maintenance period.
Cost and Which One to Purchase
The eDrive35 and eDrive40 trims, which are less expensive and less powerful, are better than the higher-performance M50. The M-badged model adds 19-inch wheels as standard equipment and a more commanding exterior. Additionally, it boasts a superbly adjusted suspension that enjoys aggressive driving while remaining serene and at ease in populated areas. The M variant also comes with upgraded brakes that include blue calipers. Although their bigger, stickier tires perform better and look good, the optional 20-inch rims reduce the M50’s projected driving range from 270 to 227 miles. The Premium upgrade (ambient inside lighting, electric windows and steering wheel, lumbar support), one of the leather options, and individual options like adaptive LED headlights, ventilated front seats, a Harman Kardon sound system, and wireless charging would all improve the interior.
Conclusion
The range is most dramatically reduced by high average speeds (on the highway), but inner-city traffic results in a higher range because of lower speeds and larger recuperation shares. Additionally, the range is lowered in cold weather due to heating and in hot weather due to powerful air conditioning. Choosing larger tire combinations typically limits the range of unique features or equipment. The range is also influenced by the rotational inertia class of the tires; for example, winter tires reduce the range compared to Label A summer tires.
The world’s first completely electric BMW i4 offers superb dynamics, a high level of comfort, and the characteristics we want in a daily driver. The five-door vehicle has fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology for impressive performance numbers. Five roomy full-sized seats and a long range of up to 590 kilometers* make it the ideal travel partner.
